Infrared Spectroscopy

A Bruker Tensor 37 FTIR with MCT-A detector is used to study samples consisting of thin films as a function of temperature. An infrared study of samples allows unique identification of solids that are present when a sample crystallizes. The transition temperatures observed using the FTIR are compared with the results obtained from the DSC.

Our lab uses a low temperature cell for the IR analysis of thin films. Liquid nitrogen is poured into a cup surrounded by foam in order to cool the sample inside the cell. The low temperature cell inside the FTIR is pictured below:
