Stanislaus (Valparaiso University); MEGA collaborationAbstract: The MEGA experiment has been done at the Los Alamos National Laboratory Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) accelerator. The experiment is a high precision search for the yet un-observed decay mode for the muon, mu -> e + gamma. The fact that all observed decays of the muon to date are ones which conserve lepton family number is now articulated as a conservation law in the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. However, there is no known reason why the mu -> e + gamma decay should not occur and it is predicted to occur by nearly all extensions to the Standard Model. This experiment will either discover this decay mode, or it will will set a new world limit for the precision with which we can say it has not been seen. |
