Dean Jones says:

Hmmm...OK I can agree to that revised schedule, but in return I'll want to see lots of research publications (or a few, in high-quality journals!).  Here is the new contract package I'd like to offer you:

**ONE guaranteed trip to a conference each year for two years

**$1,200 for software to analyze data

**$12,000 for hardware (i.e., special computer processor and other equipment)

**A nine-month salary at the 64th percentile

**Required to teach three summer sessions, none of which count toward your teaching load

**Two-day-a-week teaching schedule for both semesters your first year.

Welcome to our university!"

Critique:

This was a good deal for you.  You got a high salary, and a software and hardware budget that was higher than initially offered. Your "nibbling" approach to getting the teaching load down from five-days-a-week to first three-days-a-week, then later two-days-a-week was effective.  It didn't cost the Dean very much and it will prove valuable to you for giving you big blocks of time for writing.  Feel free to try again to see if you can get an even better deal.
