Abstract

This paper discusses the potential utilization of quantitative "decision trees" and qualitative "relevance trees" by mediators as they intervene in conflict.

The paper also considers how mediation theory might be re-interpreted using relevance trees.  Finally, one professional mediator's "typical strategy" is illustrated using relevance trees.

Such an approach to data gathering might lead to the identification of new, important variables, resulting in refined mediation theories.

It may also be useful for mediator training, as experience mentors share their "cognitive maps" via relevance trees with trainees.
