Abstract

The present paper has a twofold purpose:  First, it acquaints conflict researchers with the Distributed Cognition (DC) approach to decision making and how it differs from traditional cognitive theories.  Second, it shows how the DC approach may be useful for better understanding dynamic cognitive processes within third party dispute resolution procedures, such as mediation and arbitration.  The DC approach offers a valuable approach for researchers to understand conflict management processes.
