Dean Jones says:

"You make an excellent point.  I am willing to adjust my offer a bit. I'll raise the nine-month salary to the 60th percentile and lower the number of days per week that you teach to three.

Here is the new contract package I'd like to offer you:

**ONE guaranteed trip to a conference each year for two years

**$1,000 for software to analyze data

**$10,000 for hardware (i.e., special computer processor and other equipment)

**A nine-month salary at the 60th percentile

**Required to teach three summer sessions, none of which count toward your teaching load

**Three-day a week teaching schedule."

How will you respond?

1.  "I accept your generous offer."

2.  "If I agree to teach three summer sessions, then it seems that I am helping to alleviate a big backlog of students.  As I understand it, your university has a bottleneck and you are using summer school to relieve the pressure on class sizes during the normal school year.  I think that should be worth something to you... Perhaps, in return for me teaching so much in the summer, you could increase my regular academic-year salary to the 89th percentile."

3.  "If I agree to accept these terms for software and hardware, I may have purchase some additional software or equipment out of my own pocket.  Perhaps, in return for me doing that, you could increase my regular academic-year salary to the 90th percentile."
